Note: The herd sizes are very approximate.  You may find that your small herd consumes a lot more of one mineral than another larger herd might, but these sizes give a rough estimate to help you pinpoint where to get started.  You can reorder in 2#, 4#, 8# and 25# sizes of each mineral on the reorder page after you see which specific minerals your herd needs most.

Shipping: The small kit was designed to fit in USPS shipping weights so we can get it to you quickly. It typically arrives within 5 days across the country.  All larger kits will ship UPS and take 7-10 business days.

How soon will I need to reorder?

Consumption varies greatly between herds and we've found it is not possible to anticipate which minerals a specific herd will need, but you'll find that many of these will not need to be reordered for quite some time.  We have users still using the same original minerals a year later because their goats consume hardly any.  You will find that you'll have about 5 or 6 top minerals you'll need to reorder fairly quickly but as your animals get into balance, they'll consume less and less, or switch to another few favorites as their needs change.

Oct 2024 update: Life got too busy and I stopped tracking consumption, but approaching 3.5 years in on this system, I hardly refill my minerals.  It's a larger up front investment that leads to longer term stability.

Is this safe for _______?

According to FCE, the mineral buffet is safe for all species which makes this system ideal for mixed species herds.  That's one of my favorite parts, not worrying if my sheep or goats are getting enough!

Mineral Buffet Starter Kits and orders for small items will ship via USPS; mineral reorders and large orders (25lb minerals, 40 and 50lb kelp, etc) will ship via UPS for the most part.

Small herd, BIG benefits!!!

I have started a small Pygmy and Nigerian Dwarf goat herd and a small alpaca herd. Personally, I use natural herbs, essential oils, and food as medicine and always want to do the same for my animals. I found Little Avalon Farm and the Mineral Buffet in my research and was so excited when she offered a Black Friday sale! I purchased the 2 pound option. Although the minerals showed up quickly, I had yet to find a way of offering the minerals to my animals. After a few weeks, I found an alternative feeder that I was happy with (picture below). These rotating decorations have separate compartments which I labeled with an acrylic marker and filled with individual minerals.

As soon as I presented the free choice minerals to my goats, they tasted different minerals, drank some water and went on their happy way. Since then, I have noticed increased energy, little scabs on their heads healing and shiny coats.

Took a leap of faith......

After reading all of the comments on the Little Avalon Farm Mineral Buffet, I decided to take a leap of faith. My goats were eating the Goat Minerals by Manna Pro just fine. Switched to minerals by Redmond (which I cannot recommend) when Manna Pro brand ran out and they stopped eating the minerals all together. I feel like the mineral buffet makes perfect sense, so I purchased the starter kit. Can I just say it arrived from Washington state all the way to GEORGIA in just F O U R days?!!!! Impressive. Threw together a buffet station out of some wood scraps we had and added ball mason jars. Labeled the bottom of the jars for refilling with ease, put them in ABC order by mineral name so we could keep them in the same spot (yes, our goats are THAT smart). Locked the goats out of the barn while we filled them since their curiosity seems to get the best of them. When we let them in to explore the mineral buffet, they smelled every single mineral. They were very interested in the minerals. So far, they are going for the vitamin b and c, a little potassium, and a little boron. In 10 or so days, I have had to refill the vitamin b/c several times. Almost daily. While there are a lot more minerals to explore in the buffet, I feel like they are nibbling new ones as time passes. If I had a lot of goats, the mineral buffet may not be feasible. About to reorder a few already. SO easy to monitor their deficiencies with this system. I was concerned about the minerals getting caked, so I got the rice hull version to prevent this. My mineral goat buffet is inside the barn and not exposed to the weather. My goats are pasture raised and not able to free range in the wooded areas and this is the main reason I want them on the mineral buffet. So far I am giving it a 10 out of 10. Minerals are bagged in good quality resealable bags. Labels are easy to read. Mindful emails with valuable information and discussions on goat keeping are an added bonus. Hope this system stays around for many years to come! I am sold so far.
